Domains
and web hosting are two seperate things. You can buy your domain
from one place and your hosting at another. Or you can buy both
at the same place. If you buy your domain from us it's simple (not
to mention cheap!) because at the time you purchase it we will automatically
configure it for hosting on our server (unless you alter the set-up,
which you can do). But if you bought your domain elsewhere you will
have to 'point' it to our server so that it is directed to our server.
When
you guy a domain you have to pay the renewal fee for it every year.
We recommend that when your domain comes up for renewal you transfer
it to our server so that it no longer is just pointed to us, but
housed with us as well. Why? Simply to save you money on our low
domain renewal prices.
If you need to point your domain (leaving the domain with a different
domain registry but hosted with us) here's how you do it:
1. Go to the web site where you purchased your domain. That's where
it is housed.
2. Log in to the domain control with the username and password they
gave you when you purchased the domain.
3. Change the DNS settings from whatever they are to ns1.etinternetservices.com
and ns2.etinternetservices.com. If there is a third one delete
it and leave the space blank.
4. You are liable to get all sorts of warning messages that changing
the DNS will cause you to lose the features they have. Some domain
registries will throw several of these 'warning' messages at you.
They are simply because they don't want to lose you: they know if
you change your DNS records to our server you will be paying our
low prices for hosting and not hosting with them.
That's it--you're done.
To transfer your domain to us you will need to do the following:
1. Go to the web site where you purchased your domain since that's
where it is housed.
2. Log in to the domain control with the username and password they
gave you when you purchased the domain.
3. Check the locking status of the domain. If it is 'locked' unlock
it.
4. If you have to unlock it, wait 24 hours before going on to step
5.
5. Go to our domain
transfer center. Input your domain name and then just follow
the steps through the process of making a transfer request. Part
of that will be creating an ID with your name and other information.
Make close note of your username and password: those things are
always important to hang on to!
6. When you're done our registry will send a request for the domain
to your old registry. Your old registry will then send you an email
because they want to ensure it really is you who is making the request
to move the domain, not someone else.
7. The email you receive from your old registry will have instructions
in it as to what you need to do to approve the transfer. Sometimes
it will be to respond to the email, but usually it will be directions
to go to a specific web page and input a password (which is given
to you in the email).
8. Sometimes the old registry (depending on who the registry you're
with is) will make you go through a couple of extra steps--they
really don't want to lose the money they intend to get from you,
so they try and make it a bit awkward to depart hoping you'll give
up. Just make sure you read the instructions and follow them so
the transfer will take effect.
9. Note that even if you transfer your domain to us, where it is
POINTED doesn't change. If it is pointed to us before you transfer
it still will be. If it is pointed elsewhere before you start the
transfer it still will be pointed elsewhere when the transfer is
complete. So you will now need to point it to us. Go to our domain
control center (since we now hold your domain), log in, and change
the DNS settings to us.
